Amidst majestic peaks, the Austrian high mountain valley lies at an altitude of 1,100 to 1,250 meters on the northern edge of the Alps. The Walser mountains border the Lechtaler Alps in the east and southeast, the foothills of the Alps open to the north and the Widderstein (2,536 m) borders the Lechquellengebirge / Arlberg and the Bregenzerwald in the south and west.
History: The valley was settled around 1270 by the Walsers, an ethnic group that immigrated from the upper Valais (Switzerland). The dialect has maintained itself quite well and differs significantly from the neighbors in Vorarlberg and the Allgäu. While the Walsers settled along the Breitach, the side valleys remained pure alpine area - original and pure. Four mountains are accessible to you by mountain railways. Even in summer, there are eight cable cars and chairlifts available.
Today about 5,000 people live in the three villages of Kleinwalsertal - Riezlern, Hirschegg and Mittelberg with Baad. Most of them are working in tourism and are looking forward to your visit. The valley offers travelers the opportunity to use 30 lifts, 6 chairlifts and 2 gondolas. The first mountain railway of the valley, the Kanzelwandbahn, was completed in 1955 in Riezlern.
In addition to the ski slopes, a fun park and a boarder park are also offered. Furthermore, there are several small lifts in the valley, which are connected through a big path, the Walser-Skigleitweg. Thus, in the Kleinwalsertal, a total of 56 groomed kilometers of slopes are available, together with the slopes on the German side even 76 km. There are also 42 km of cross-country trails between 1050 and 1260 m above sea level A. and more than 50 km of cleared or groomed winter hiking trails.
